Amsterdam, 26th November 2022–Venezuela’s government and opposition signed an agreement on Saturday in Mexico for more social security. 

Now that the two sides are back in talks, the United States has decided to lift some of the sanctions against the country.
In Mexico, deputies of 

President Nicolás Maduro and the opposition met again after negotiations had stalled for months. According to the US, the agreement covers education, health and food security, among other things.
In 2019 Maduro declared himself the winner of the elections, but according to the opposition they were unfair. Many countries recognize 

opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the real president of the country.
Maduro has always denied that the elections were wrong and held on to power. The hope is that the talks will also lead to fair elections in 2024.
The US sees the deal as a step in the right direction “to alleviate the suffering of the Venezuelan people and to restore democracy”. 

They therefore remove a number of sanctions and, for example, give the company Chevron a license to import oil from Venezuela again.
That country has one of the largest oil reserves in the world, but very poor governance has caused an enormous lot of economic damage and wrecked the country. 

Food and medicine shortages are common.

According to the United Nations, 

7 million Venezuelans have fled the country in recent years.
